Abstract

The Brazilian Northeast faces a serious threat of water scarcity. The situation could still be intensified due to prevailing drought conditions. Therefore, there is a need for consistent monitoring of drought to observe its severity, duration and extent, to ensure effective planning and to mitigate its possible adverse effects. In view of this aspect the objective of this work is to quantify the environmental conditions for drought in the years 2010 and 2016 through the Drought Severity Index (DSI) algorithm, to compare the spatial events of drought in the States of Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco and Alagoas, using orbital data from the MODIS / Terra sensor products NDVI and LST. The Drought Severity Index (ISD) were calculated and mapped to identify regions prone to spatial scale drought. The results suggest that there were DSI variations for the years analyzed, 2010 and 2016. In 2010, high drought patterns were recorded in the Sertão region of the States analyzed; Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco and Alagoas, with values ranging from -1.19 to - 1.49 of DSI. However, the values corresponding to moisture levels obtained a small spatial distribution, with values in the range of 1.19 - 1.49. On the other hand, for the year 2016 the DSI presented a greater temporal reach, with extreme drought index, <-1.50, in the month of November. The present study evidences the importance of orbital data monitoring, as well as the application of the index in drought monitoring at high spatial and temporal scales.
