ABSTRACT
Environmental impact can be defined as any alteration in the physical, chemical and biological environment, resulting from human activities that directly or indirectly affect the health, safety and welfare of the population. The benthic macro invertebrate communities have often been used in the assessment of environmental and biological monitoring. The present work aims to study the community of benthic invertebrates of the river Órbigo, Spain and apply biological diversity indices for assessing the water quality, due to its inclusion in engineering projects of rehabilitation of urban rivers. The taxonomic composition and structure of benthic communities showed low richness and taxonomic diversity, related to reduced water quality. No significant difference was found between groups found in benthic sampling stations.
