Losing a brother until adolescence: experience in adult life

Sílvia da Encarnação de Barros Ramos

Objective: to describe the experience of losing a sibling during childhood and adolescence. Method: a phenomenological study, of an interpretative nature, in which twenty-one people from the community participated, selected intentionally, respecting previously established criteria. For the collection of information, unstructured interviews were conducted. Results: the phenomenon was revealed, through the narrative of the participants, through five common themes that were denominated "Echoes of the experience of the fraternal mourning"; "In search of justification"; "Happiness is moments!"; "Sources of inner strength" and "Life and health today". Conclusion: the importance of identifying the signs and characteristics of a fraternal loss experienced during childhood or adolescence and of the evaluation of the impact of it on their life and of their families, which can support a planned Nursing intervention with a view to effects that may arise in adult life. It identifies the impact of the child's death on the lives of siblings and other cohabitants and the intervention model that necessarily addresses the relationship of help to the bereaved family in an integrated way. Descriptors: Child; Adolescent; Mourning; Brothers; Nursing; Death.
