The preservation of water sources is a condition for the survival of living beings. The quality of the water supplied is frequently monitored through coliform testing. The source of the Mundaú River, located in the municipality of Garanhuns, is the distribution point of the hydrographic network that covers the northwest of Pernambuco and the center-north-east of Alagoas. This work analyzed the contamination of the sources of the Mundaú River in the municipality of Garanhuns. In the years 2021 and 2022, during periods of low rainfall, samples were collected from springs in three different locations in each of the springs. The samples were subjected to microbiological tests to search for total coliforms, Escherichia coli and thermotolerant coliforms. All collection locations were demarcated by Garmin GPSmap 78s to locate the points and later these points were introduced into the Qgis 3.6 software for data interpolation. The results demonstrated high contamination in almost all springs investigated. Contamination showed a significant decrease at the end points of several collections due to factors such as dilution of contamination, entry of new volumes of water, self-purification, among others. The results reflect an important failure in the implementation of basic sanitation in the municipality of Garanhuns, and the lack of a conservation policy for important water sources in the states of Pernambuco and Alagoas.
