Remote sensing is widely used to monitor tropical forests. In Brazil, the PRODES Project is a benchmark for controlling and monitoring deforestation, which used Landsat 5 images with medium spatial resolution (from 10 to 30 m). Over the years, other tools have been improved, generating better quality data in less time. Currently, monthly base maps of 64 tropical countries have high spatial resolution (1 to 5 m) and make it possible to map vegetation gaps. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of Planet images in quantifying clearings formed by logging. The area studied was an Annual Production Unit (UPA) in the Jamari National Forest, under a forest concession regime. The images were processed and then the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and supervised classification using the probabilistic Gaussian mixture model were applied to identify clearings caused by logging. In addition to the satellite images, field damage survey data collected by the utility company was used. The classification of the images showed that 9.43% of the area of effective exploitation of the UPA had been cleared of canopy and the quantification of damage in the field showed 11.91%. It was not possible to classify clearings from skid trails and felling clearings with small canopies using the images. However, the study proved to be effective in monitoring clearings caused by roads and the felling of trees with large crowns. This highlights its importance in controlling and monitoring deforestation in the Amazon.
