The present work aims to identify the financial literacy of incoming students at a Higher Education Institution in the agreste region of Pernambuco, investigating whether there is a relationship with their socioeconomic characteristics. To this end, an interview was conducted in person, and a questionnaire adapted from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD, 2011), consisting of 82 questions, was applied. The sample consisted of 128 students from the first and second periods. Descriptive statistics and ANOVA tests (Analysis of Variance), Tukey’s post-hoc and Fisher’s Chi-Square were used for data analysis, taking into account the objective, data types, and sample characteristics. The results indicate a better average financial literacy of the individuals in the sample than those observed by the OECD (OECD 2016; 2020), where specifically only financial behavior was inferior. By associating the answers to the questions and the scores with the socioeconomic characteristics, among the results, the need to stimulate financial inclusion through the possibility of greater knowledge and acquisition of financial products, as well as actions that improve the financial knowledge of women, stands out. Therefore, it is relevant to investigate the financial literacy of students, taking into account their socioeconomic characteristics. In this way, it is possible to arrive at more accurate diagnoses, which can direct more effective actions, either through public policies, regulatory policies, or even educational institutions.
