MICROCREDIT IN RIO DE JANEIRO: AN ANALYSIS OF THE BNDES-VIVACRED CASE

Microcredit has been referred as an important instrument of poverty reduction and development of microenterprises. This article aims to analyze the performance of Vivacred and BNDES, in the microcredit sector, focusing on the evaluation of congruencies and disparities in relation to the theoretical framework. The research was implemented through observation and unstructured interviews with professionals involved with the Vivacred program and BNDES. The data obtained were compared with the conceptual framework. It was discovered that the case studied approaches forcefully in the existing theory. The evolution of credit supply, with institutions offering financial services targeted to low-income population with high levels of productivity and low levels of insolvency, is a major challenge for the sector. Major credit supply can lead to positive impacts in the level of consumption and income of microentrepreneurs, culminating with the reduction of social disparities.Downloads
