Resumo
Resumo: Melchiorre Cesarotti (1730-1808), nascido em Pádua, foi um escritor, ensaísta, professor e tradutor italiano. Embora tenha se dedicado ao estudo e tradução dos clássicos desde muito jovem, aproximou-se também de autores mais modernos, traduzindo Voltaire e as poesias de Ossian, que contribuíram para divulgar os temas e ambientes crepusculares na Itália, elementos-chave para a estética romântica, que foram retomados depois por Foscolo e Leopardi. O texto a seguir, presente em Prose edite e inedite. Modena: Zanichelli, 1882. p. 243- 245, é parte das Osservazioni publicadas junto aos poemas de Ossian. Nele Cesarotti explica como e por que fez uma tradução mais livre, focada na adequação da língua e dos temas às novas conjunturas históricas, e não centrada apenas na forma, como defendiam os Neoclassicistas das academias da Crusca e da Arcádia, da qual também fazia parte.

Abstract: Melchiorre Cesarotti (1730-1808) was born at Padua. He was a writer, an essayist, a professor and an Italian translator. Although he had been dedicated to the study and translation of classics from a young age, he also approached to the most contemporary authors, translating Voltaire and the poems of Ossian, who helped to publicize the issues and the twilight in Italy, key elements for the romantic aesthetic, which were resumed later by Foscolo and Leopardi. The following text, present in Prose edite e inedite. Modena: Zanichelli, 1882. p. 243-245, is part of the Osservazioni published with the poems of Ossian. Cesarotti explains how and why he didn’t translate literally, focused on the adequacy of the language and themes of the new historical conjunctures, and not focused only on the form, as the neo-classical Crusca and the Arcadia academies defended, which he also took part.
