Abstract

The evolution of monetary standards throughout global economic history reflects not only financial transformations but also the political, social, and technological changes that have shaped the global landscape. The gold standard, for example, provided stability by linking the value of currencies to gold reserves, but this model was challenged by events such as the First World War, which led to the transition to the Bretton Woods system and, later, the adoption of floating exchange rates. In the contemporary context, the rise of cryptocurrencies represents a disruptive phenomenon that challenges traditional financial models. Created as decentralised alternatives, cryptocurrencies allow direct transfers between individuals without the need for financial institutions, introducing new dynamics into global economic transactions. Furthermore, de-dollarisation, a growing phenomenon in many countries, reflects the search for greater autonomy and diversification in monetary and trade policies. By reducing dependence on the dollar and exploring local currencies and cryptocurrencies, nations aim to strengthen their economic sovereignty and mitigate the risks associated with the volatility of reserve currencies. In light of these changes, the need for effective regulation to ensure legal security and financial stability becomes urgent. In this context, the present study uses qualitative research and a deductive method, with bibliographic and documentary review, to examine the challenges of regulating cryptocurrencies in global trade.
