Abstract
During the 1840’s, seven violent attacks against Portuguese immigrants in Recife, Brazil, and various demonstrations of violence became known as mata- marinheiros. These demonstrations, street riots targeting Portuguese immigrants, had the objective to promote fear in the Portuguese community from Recife. The existing records demonstrate that the individuals responsible for enacting these acts of violence were not acting independently. The protesters were subordinated to a leader, whose leadership was either connected with the Praieiro Party or the Liberal party. In that light, the actions of violence towards this community of Portuguese immigrants were the result of urban patronage. This article reconstructs the dramatic historical framework on which Anti-Portuguese riots took place. It examines the extent of the violent attacks towards the Portuguese community and analyzes the motives of the “populaça do Recife” to act independently and on their own. The protests against those from Portugal in Recife is one of the most significant popular protests in nineteenth-century Brazil.

Keywords: anti-Portuguese, popular protest, mata-marinheiro (Anti-Portuguese riot).
