History

Founded at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), CLIO Arqueológica celebrates more than four decades of continuous contribution to archaeology and heritage preservation. Since its first issues, published in 1984, it has been dedicated to providing a space for the dissemination of original research and has thus followed the evolution of inter- and multidisciplinary methodologies, theories, and practices.

Over the decades, CLIO Arqueológica has established  itself as a publication of considerable  relevance to the field, featuring  studies that reflect not only scholarly production from Northeastern Brazil but also interregional and international dialogues. In doing so, the journal has contributed to strengthening  UFPE’s Graduate Program in Archaeology and to fostering an academic community engaged with contemporary themes.

In 2014, CLIO Arqueológica adopted an exclusively online publication model grounded in open-access  principles. Beginning in 2020, authors have  retained the copyright to their works while granting CLIO Arqueológica the right of first publication;  the works are simultaneously licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license. CLIO Arqueológica retains the copyright for works published between 1984 and 2019 and grants the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license to this content in order to ensure open access.

Clio Arqueológica reaffirms its commitment to the democratization of knowledge by maintaining itself as a fully open-access and free publication. We believe  that scientific production in archaeology and related fields should circulate without financial barriers, ensuring that researchers, students, professionals, and interested communities can access, read, and make use of published research. By adopting open access, we strengthen transparency, expand  the social impact of archaeology, and contribute to a more inclusive, collaborative, and socially-relevant scientific practice.

Today, CLIO Arqueológica reaffirms its purpose: to disseminate high-quality archaeological research, foster critical debate on cultural heritage and emerging archaeological practices, and promote the integration of scientific knowledge with societal needs. Authors are invited to submit unpublished manuscripts, contributing to ensuring that the next forty years are likewise marked by innovation, rigor, and impact.
