ABSTRACT

Bones from indigenous cemeteries are preserved by components and constituents of soil influencing the bone diagenetic process. In this work, samples from three cemeteries located in the sertão of Paraíba were analyzed. The steps involved in process and the different degradation in plants and in lithic material were shown. The pH, salinity and humidity, were compared with the range and average preserved condition of bones. The conclusion proposes further studies on bone diagenetic mechanisms, mainly on theimportance of soil fauna in preservation of indigenous bones around the world.
