Among the naturalists/botanists who developed floristic inventories or taxonomic studies in Ceará territory, we highlight Philipp von Luetzelburg who collected in different parts of the Brazilian territory and specifically in Ceará, between 1934-1937. His collections precede the creation of the EAC Herbarium in 1939 at the Federal University of Ceará in Fortaleza. The Luetzelburg studies were one of the first efforts to gather information on plant species and types of phytophysiognomies recorded in the state of Ceará. Several specimens collected by Luetzelburg were described as new to Science.
Keywords: cariri cearense; floristic survey; Northeast region; Brazil.
