Degrowth x sustainable development | the debate

The debate starts from the principle that the capitalist economic development model is being questioned. Economic dynamics and labor productivity are dropping worldwide; social inequality is increasing alarmingly; financial instability is pushing the world into crisis; and the harmful impacts on nature are increasing, putting the survival of humanity at risk. The authors discuss two alternatives that have stood out in this century: sustainable development, created by the UN through the Brundtland report in 1987; and degrowth, the result of an intellectual movement, especially in Europe. The SD alternative proposes the continuity of economic growth, but with regard for the distribution of wealth and the preservation of nature. Degrowth considers this proposal to be an oxymoron, a contradiction in itself, and proposes a decrease in production and consumption in the North and an adequate growth to the ecosystems in the South.References
