Spaciality and Political Groups in protest: ACT against education`s cut in São Paulo 08/13/2019

Abstract

Around march of 2019, the Federal Government of the president Jair Bolsonaro announced the cut of R$ 5,8 billion from the education budget. Many university and federal institutes demonstrated the impossibility of maintain the activities if such act was maintained, triggering students manifestations all around the country. Convocated by the União Nacional dos Estudantes (UNE), on the day 08/13/2019, was promoted one more of these manifestations, nicknamed by them of “Education’s Tsunami”.

For being in São Paulo to attend an event, I had the opportunity to witness this act and to exercise my photography. The visual essay exposed here came later, only when observed the images. The photographs bring how the political groups, envolved in this moment of such heterogeneity, were spatiality disposed in the act.

Guran¹ identifies the photographic potencial in two moments, the first one to discover and the second one to tell. In the first one we would the the step to find out informations, one moment of familiarization with the field and posteriorly understand, utilizing the photography as a manner to emphasize aspects and develop your study proposal. In this way, I identify that I was in the day of the act in the discovery moment, especially for being in a state (São Paulo) and region (Southeast) different from my own – Pernambuco and Northeast.

The posterior analysis of the images in Recife, made me realize how certain political groups were inserted in this particularly act. The “photography to tell” served to analyze e show how such groups were spatially located at the beginning of the act and focusing in the protagonism of antifascists in the act during the journey.

The protest had the concentration in the São Paulo Museum of Art, located in the Bela Vista neighborhood, going to the Republic Square, the headquarters of the São Paulo Department of Education. With the help of Google Maps, I sought to reconstruct how these groups were present before the act leave to the final destination.
