Characterization of land use and land cover in the Moxotó River basin using satellite images

This study used satellite data from the SRTM and Landsat-8 satellites to characterize the most important natural conditions in the Moxotó River basin, located in a semiarid environment, encompassing parts of the western state of Alagoas, central and southwestern Pernambuco, and southern Paraíba. Digital vegetation classification techniques, such as NDVI and semi-automatic pixel value classification, were used to characterize and identify wetlands and land cover types. Land cover stratification for the Moxotó River basin indicates that capoeirão represents 33.13% of the basin's total area, while bare soil accounts for 8.87%. Together, these two classes alone account for 42% of the total area, demonstrating the significant impact of low water availability on human activities in the region. Another observation that can be related to this reality is the disappearance of native vegetation and the consequent deterioration of the natural landscape, considering the percentage of these areas. These factors have contributed to the disappearance of native vegetation and the deterioration of the landscape. Results such as these were made possible thanks to the use of remote sensing data, which today facilitates decision-making based on diagnoses constructed using software tools such as QGIS for information processing and modeling.
