Protected areas and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): scenarios and interfaces

The challenge for protected areas is to combine ecological preservation with socio-cultural protection and conscious economic exploitation. This is in line with the general proposal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In order to identify in the scientific literature empirical research on protected areas that contribute to achieving the SDGs, a systematic and bibliometric review of the literature was carried out in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. Seventy-two (72) articles were selected. The main findings showed that all the SDGs were related and debated. SDG 15 (Life on Land) stood out, with 52.78% of the papers alluding to it. Europe and the United States account for 94.44% of the editorials that published these articles. Most of the research is carried out in peripheral countries and focuses mainly on social and environmental issues. This construct aims to guide and encourage future research to intersect with the SDGs. And, likewise, with the concepts of interdisciplinarity and internationalization.
