Dos Moinhos de Açúcar aos Sítios de Arrabaldes: a Formação dos Bairros Continentais da Cidade do Recife
Abstract
O trabalho entrosado com os ensinamentos da geografia histórica busca realizar um resgate da evolução urbana da cidade do Recife, destacando o processo associado à formação dos seus bairros continentais. Com efeito, a análise centra-se desde o surgimento dos moinhos ou engenhos de açúcar às margens dos rios Capibaribe e Beberibe nos séculos XVI e XVII, passando pelo período de transformação destas propriedades em sítios e chácaras de arrabaldes nos séculos XVIII e XIX, até alcançar o momento de consolidação do transporte coletivo na cidade com o advento dos trens a vapor, cujos trilhos situavam-se nos caminhos de penetração do centro ao interior, e estavam alinhados aos principais cursos d’água da planície (rios Beberibe, Capibaribe, Jiquiá, Jordão e Tejipió). Esse quadro de expansão representado pelos trilhos de trens e pelos caminhos naturais das águas engendrou um processo de crescimento tentacular no Recife ao longo do século XIX e limiar do século XX, somente havendo seu desmanche no quarto decênio do século passado quando se observa a formação de um tecido urbano contínuo na cidade. A partir deste momento, o estudo busca trazer à luz uma leitura dos bairros continentais do Recife, que se mostram emoldurados pelas águas do rio e do mar, denotando “um quadro urbano de moldura líquida” (MELO, 1940). Ademais, o texto revisita estudos clássicos de autores pioneiros, afora teses e dissertações acadêmicas que se propuseram analisar nos últimos decênios a expansão urbana recifense.
