LA TEORÍA DE LA TRANSICIÓN DEMOGRÁFICA Y SU INEXACTITUD PARA AMÉRICA LATINA. PERIODO 1950-2000
Abstract
La teoría principal en demografía es la denominada teoría de la transición demográfica. A pesar de haber sido concebida para describir el cambio demográfico de Europa, se considera como modelo teórico de referencia para todos los países del mundo. El objetivo de este artículo es demostrar que la regularidad que expresa la transición demográfica propuesta por esta teoría, no se corrobora en las transiciones demográficas de los países de América Latina durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX, que por el contrario, se caracterizan por el alto grado de heterogeneidad existente entre los veinte países que conforman la región. Un factor relevante que caracteriza a la dinámica demográfica de la región, es la alta participación de los movimientos migratorios entre los años 1950 y 2000. Sin embargo, la teoría de la transición demográfica no solo se destaca por falta de precisiones y formulaciones teóricas que la hacen altamente criticables, fue construida bajo el supuesto de un modelo de poblaciones cerradas a la migración. Por tanto, resulta relevante cuestionar el valor explicativo de esta teoría y su utilidad para interpretar las transiciones demográficas en América Latina. Consideramos que estas últimas deben analizarse teniendo en cuenta la evolución de cada país.
