Between risk and disaster: a conceptual analysis of multiple components in a complex equation

The risk is inherent to the human being and has always accompanied him, either individually or in society. It is a disturbing observation, because nowadays, besides risk, there is the possibility of disasters. Studying adverse events is a challenge, considering the great conceptual diversity. This work is a proposal for analyzing the terminologies most commonly used in sociological, geographical and institutional writings. In the midst of so many approaches, it is necessary to understand how risks, dangers and threats permeate life in today's society. Human beings are at risk from birth. Human existence can be considered the foundation of risk. The counterpoint of the ideas presented here composes the debate and clarifies the meaning of the ambiguities and misconception related to risk(s) and disaster(s). Risk underpins the discussion due to its controversial and vast nature; it is the thematic agglutinating. However, it is the human being who gives meaning to extreme adverse events. Man is the subject of reflection in global society, since risky and disastrous events are only configured by human presence. Vulnerability determines the degree of severity of exposure to a dangerous event. It can also be understood that resilience is the overcoming and counterposition to vulnerability. Certainly, much has been produced in favor of understanding the events related to risk, but it has not been possible in the various areas of knowledge to equate or eliminate the adjunct complexity.
