Ecotourism and geotourism: analysis of activities carried out in conservation units in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil

The practice of tourism is directly related to local sustainability. Among the segments of tourism stand out ecotourism and geotourism, both can be carried out in Conservation Units (CUs), turning to nature conservation. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the potentialities and weaknesses related to ecotourism and geotourism activities that have been developed in the UCs of the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN) and how these contribute to local sustainable development. The RN is located in the Northeast region of Brazil, with five tourist centers. For its scope, exploratory research and bibliographic and documentary procedures were used, gathering information on the main potentialities and weaknesses regarding the ecotourism and geotourism activities present in the UCs of the State, organizing and structuring the results by the tourist poles. The State has strong potential for ecotourism and geotourism in the PAs, in the same way a series of weaknesses related directly and indirectly to these activities were identified, such as urban expansion and the lack of knowledge of the UC by the population, being fundamental its discussions for the occurrence of local sustainable development.
