QGIS software as a tool for teaching hydrology topics for higher education

The Hydrology discipline is an integral part of the mandatory curriculum for undergraduate courses in engineering and earth sciences. In recent times, there has been a reevaluation of the content and pedagogical approaches used in this discipline. At the same time, it has been a priority to provide students with a broader and more contextualized understanding of the subject, with the incorporation of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software directly into classes. Therefore, the objective of this research is to evaluate the use of the tools provided by the open source software QGIS as functional and technological components in the learning process during classes on hydrology topics, promoting the teacher's role as mediator, given practical guidelines for the integration of these tools into classes, focusing on four modules on topics such as Watershed, Precipitation and Water Resources Management. It was observed that the tools available in QGIS comprehensively addressed the topics covered in the course, enabling students to spatially visualize phenomena and concepts, from the concept of river basin to the management of natural water resources, using geoprocessing techniques. In summary, the use of geotechnologies, through practical implementation in QGIS in hydrology classes, has the potential to improve the educational approach of the discipline, aiming for a more complete understanding on the part of students on the topics, especially when the applications are relevant directly into the daily lives of students.
