The Rural development policy in Brazil, in recent years, has been associated with a set of actions undertaken in partnership between civil society organizations, government bodies and international cooperation. These measures allowed for the implementation of strategies and initiatives that establish a new rationality, whose perspective of the policy to combat drought is reconfigured, opening space for the introduction of a new paradigm: coexistence with the Semiarid. Following this guidance, the Government of the State of Paraíba, with the support of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (FIDA) through the Cariri, Seridó and Curimataú Sustainable Development Project (PROCASE) has promoted actions in 56 semi-arid municipalities, aiming to strengthen family farming and contribute to sustainable rural development. Given the above, this work aims to understand the bases and principles of PROCASE and its effects on the territorial area of Cariri in Paraíba, with emphasis on the municipality of Cabaceiras/PB. Consulting the archives highlighted the institutionality of PROCASE, observed through other procedures, such as: field research, interviews and mapping of the focus area of the study. In the municipality of Cabaceiras, the actions implemented by PROCASE constitute important strategies in an attempt to reduce inequalities, based on diversified actions, through technologies appropriate to local socioeconomic and environmental conditions, highlighting, mainly, activities related to handicrafts, small livestock farming and encouraging forage production. Such actions include goat-sheep farming, fruit farming, agro-industries, handicrafts, small mineral processing industries and other activities related to the new ruralities.
