Natural radiation is an environmental phenomenon characterized by the release of subatomic particles and electromagnetic waves from radioactive elements found in the Earth's crust, common in sources such as the sun, rocks, soil, and even foods. This phenomenon is one of the main sources of human radiation exposure, comprising three primary types: alpha (α), beta (β), and gamma (γ). Exposure occurs mainly through external and internal irradiation, resulting from gamma radiation emission during the radioactive decay of these elements, which can impact human health depending on the intensity and duration of exposure. This study investigates the presence of natural radiation in Pernambuco from environmental sources. The PRISMA methodology was used to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies on natural radioactivity in the state, covering stages of literature review, selection, exclusion, and detailed content analysis. This approach allowed for the identification and recording of anomalous areas, such as Pedra, Venturosa, Petrolina, Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Ipojuca, Olinda, and Recife. These locations present significant concentrations of radioactive elements, including uranium, thorium, and potassium, detected in samples of soil, sediments, water, and sludge. The studies indicate the presence of natural radioactivity with variations in radionuclide concentrations across different regions, influencing background radiation levels and generating various socio-environmental impacts specific to each area. Finally, the study highlights the importance of strictly adhering to guidelines and limits set by international health and safety organizations to protect public health and minimize the risks associated with radiation exposure.
