Socio-environmental perception about the pandemic and social isolation in the city of Mossoró-RN, Brazil

Since March 2020, the world has been experiencing a pandemic caused by the new coronavirus. The pandemic intensely affected the most vulnerable people and showed the global unpreparedness in the face of this public health crisis. The social context and people's behavior became a key piece to face and reduce the contagion; moreover, this scenario caused environmental impacts still immeasurable. Thus, the present study aimed to analyze the socioenvironmental perception of residents of the city of Mossoró, state of Rio Grande do Norte, about the pandemic and social isolation. The methodology included the application of a questionnaire with 18 questions through the use of Google Forms, which was disclosed in social networks and remained open between April 7th and 17th, 2020. The questionnaire reached 307 people, and the results were analyzed using Excel software, where graphics were also produced. The majority of the interviewees believed in societal isolation measures, and the main impact on their lives was identified as being financial, social, and family. Most of the participants also believe human actions were responsible for triggering this crisis, demonstrating the need to rethink this relationship between society and the environment. Perception studies tend to highlight the relevant points and how people are going through this moment, besides opening space for analysis of the measures needed to overcome health crises.
