Quaternary morpho-stratigraphy as a tool for environmental reconstruction in the Serra dos Cavalos structural massif - Pernambuco

The main objective of this work is to analyze the landscape from a systemic perspective. To this end, it seeks to reconstruct the landscape using mapping techniques and laboratory analyses, such as soil micromorphology, sedimentology, and optically stimulated luminescence dating (OSL). These techniques, combined with a morpho-stratigraphic approach, provide the basis for analyzing landform structures, linking them to temporal dynamics and the intrinsic properties of the materials that shape the landscape. Considering the climatic influence throughout the Quaternary, this research also examines local paleoclimatology, focusing on the cyclicity of high-magnitude, low-frequency events that infuse energy into environmental systems and produce colluvial deposits in the lower areas of the study region. Thus, the study aims to trace the evolutionary process of the Serra dos Cavalos structural massif, located within the municipalities of Caruaru, São Caetano, Agrestina, Altinho, São Joaquim do Monte, and Camocim de São Félix. The OSL dating results indicate the influence of regional climatic events, acting as energy inputs that facilitated sediment transport along the slopes. The obtained ages are associated with the Paleo-ENSO event, following semi-arid periods that were interrupted by episodes of intense rainfall, which disrupted the landscape’s stability.
