Abstract

The work is the translation to Portuguese of one text published by the antropogeographer Ellen Semple dealing with the influences that mountains exert, as geofactor, over spatial patterns of human populations and históric espacial changes as well. The ideas of progress and spatial cultural diffusion guide the work. Previous introductory comments are provided by the translator explaining the value of Semple' s work to the understanding not only of the past but also of the contemporary spatial trends.
