Classification of ecological trails based on physical and environmental criteria: a case study in Cachoeira, Bahia

The municipality of Cachoeira (BA), renowned for its historical and environmental significance, holds high potential for trail-based ecotourism. This study analysed two local routes — Cachoeira de Murutuba and Cachoeira da Escada do Sino — aiming to identify, characterise and classify their degrees of difficulty to support the planning of sustainable ecotourism activities. The research employed bibliographical data, geoprocessing and field surveys, considering geological, pedological, geomorphological and vegetation cover aspects. The trails were segmented and classified into easy, moderate and difficult sections, according to criteria such as physical effort, natural risks, orientation and slope. The Cachoeira de Murutuba trail predominantly featured easy and moderate sections, with difficult stretches located near the waterfall. In contrast, the Cachoeira da Escada do Sino trail, although longer, was classified only as easy and moderate, with no difficult stretches, making it suitable for a broader range of visitors. The results highlight anthropogenic influences such as agricultural use and the presence of secondary vegetation, as well as varied geological characteristics. The study emphasises the need for proper management and signage to ensure visitor safety and the conservation of natural resources, reinforcing the role of these trails as tools for environmental education and the promotion of sustainable ecotourism in the region.
