Abstract

This article aims to examine how manga simulate and reconfigure techniques from cinema. To this end, I present a brief contextualization of manga as a product of Japanese visual culture (Bouissou, 2010; Exner, 2022; Napier, 2005, 2011; Norris, 2009) and a discussion of the notion of intermedial references (Clüver, 2012; Elleström, 2017; Rajewsky, 2010, 2012). Next, I explore the “cinematography” of comics based on framing and editing processes (Barbieri, 2017; Bordwell; Thompson, 2013; Groensteen, 2015; Ramos, 2009; Stein, 2015). The results indicate that simulating cinematic techniques provides comics with different ways to articulate the categories of space and time, enabling them to suggest the idea of movement, as well as controlling the reading pace by creating asymmetries between the duration of actions and how characters and readers perceive them.
