Between Botticelli and Beyoncé – the (re)birth of Venus: quotationism of image in contemporary visual culture

Abstract

In contemporary times, the creation of images in Art and Visual Culture draws on other pre-existing images, through a phenomenon known as citationism. This article aims to analyze how Art and other artifacts of Visual Culture dynamize aesthetic experiences and reverberate in other productions through citations and appropriations. To this end, we developed an analytical and bibliographical research, grounded in Cultural Studies. Initially, we analyzed how the painting The Birth of Venus (1484-6), by Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510), was conceived, and how it survived the test of time being reinterpreted. Then, we made aesthetic comparisons between the visual aspects of Botticelli's painting and Renaissance (2022), an album by the American singer Beyoncé (1981-). We identified citationism among the female silhouettes, the movements of the hair, the effects of wind, the emergence of shells, the positioning of arms and hands, and other similar aspects between the two “goddesses”.

João Paulo Baliscei, Maringá State University

Ph.D. in Education (2018) from the Graduate Program at the State University of Maringá, with studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Barcelona, Spain. Master’s degree in Education (2014) from the State University of Maringá; Specialist in Art Education (2010) and Special Education (2011) from the Institute of Advanced Studies and Graduate Studies; and Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from the University Center of Maringá (2009). He is a professor in the Visual Arts program at the State University of Maringá and coordinator of the Research Group on Art, Education, and Images (ARTEI). His research focuses on Education, Art/Art Education; Cultural Studies; Visual Culture Studies; Visualities; Gender and Masculinities. Author of the book: PROVOQUE: Visual Culture, Masculinities, and Visual Arts Education.

João Pedro Zanin Ferreira da Silva, Maringá State University

Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design (2022) from Centro Universitário Cidade Verde (UniCV). Currently pursuing a degree in Education at the State University of Maringá (UEM). He has been a member of the Research Group on Art, Education, and Images (ARTEI) since 2023, where he conducts research on Education, Art/Art Education; Cultural Studies; Visual Culture Studies; Visualities; Citationism; and Contemporary Art. She received a fellowship from the Institutional Scientific Initiation Fellowship Program (PIBIC) in 2024 for the project “‘Mona, are you crazy?’: References to Art in Popular Culture and to Popular Culture in Contemporary Art.”
