Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission is original, unpublished, and is not under review by another publication. If otherwise, this must be justified in the "Comments to the editor" section.
  • The submitted document is in Microsoft Word format.
  • Authors must attach a declaration of originality confirming that the material has not been published and is not under review elsewhere
  • All authors have correctly provided their short bios (maximum of 5 lines, in the article’s language).
  • URLs were included in the references whenever possible.
  • The text complies with the style guidelines and formatting and referencing requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, available on the “About/Submissions” page.
  • All authors have correctly provided their ORCID identifiers.
  • All authors have correctly provided their Lattes profiles (for Brazilian authors).
  • All authors have correctly provided their institutional affiliations.

Author Guidelines

Submission Guidelines for Regular Publications and Dossiers

The Cartema Journal accepts contributions only after registration in the system and subsequent access via login and password, required for submitting papers and tracking the editorial process.

Anonymous Submission for Peer Review

The Cartema Journal conducts anonymous review; neither authors’ nor reviewers’ names are revealed to each other. To prepare electronic submission, the editorial team requests the omission of authors’ names, institutions, and any other information that may inadvertently identify them.

  • Authors must declare awareness of these guidelines and full agreement with their content.

  • Submissions not in compliance with the guidelines will be returned to authors.

  • Submitted contributions must be original and unpublished; they cannot be presented or published in:

    • Another journal

    • Media

    • Social network

    • Any other platform

  • Submitting the manuscript implies the transfer of copyright to Cartema Journal for first publication.


Formatting Guidelines

Articles

Article structure must strictly follow this order:

  • Title in bold in the original language of the text.

  • Title in bold translated into two of the other accepted languages (Portuguese, Spanish, English).

  • Abstract in the original language, highlighting the objective, methodology, results, and conclusions (130–150 words), with 3–5 keywords, separated by semicolons.

    • Abstract and keywords must be typed in Times New Roman, size 11, single-spacing

  • Abstract and keywords translated into two of the other accepted languages

  • Manuscripts must be prepared in Word (.docx), Times New Roman, size 12, single line spacing, justified paragraphs

    • Length: 10–20 A4 pages, including abstract(s), images, graphs, references, notes, etc.

  • Citations and references must follow the author-date system of NBR 6023 (ABNT, 2018)

  • Footnotes may be used only for complementary information

  • Image reproduction is the sole responsibility of authors, in compliance with Brazilian copyright law

  • References must follow NBR 6023 (ABNT, 2018) and be listed under References

  • Images must be submitted in JPEG format, with minimum resolution of 300 dpi and maximum dimensions of 17 × 24 cm


Visual Essays

Visual essays may be up to 10 pages, focusing on visual production with a one-page critical-reflective text.

  • The reflective text must be typed in Word (.docx), Times New Roman, size 12, single spacing, justified

Other requirements:

  • No abstract required

  • Title in bold in original language

  • Title in bold translated into two of the other accepted languages

  • Image reproduction is the sole responsibility of authors, under Brazilian copyright law

  • References must follow NBR 6023 (ABNT, 2018) and be listed under References

  • Images must be JPEG, minimum 300 dpi, maximum 17 × 24 cm


Commented Artistic Exhibitions

The structure for reflective texts on artistic exhibitions must strictly follow this order:

  • Title in bold in original language

  • Title in bold translated into two of the other accepted languages

  • Texts must include title, venue, city, and opening/closing dates of the exhibition

  • Must be typed in Word (.docx), Times New Roman, size 12, single spacing, justified

    • Up to 3 A4 pages, including images, references, and notes

  • Image reproduction is the sole responsibility of authors, under current copyright law

  • References must follow NBR 6023 (ABNT, 2023) and be listed under References

  • Images must be JPEG, minimum 300 dpi, maximum 17 × 24 cm


Authorship Identification in Supplementary Document

Authorship identification must be submitted as Supplementary Document in step 4 of submission.

The document, formatted like the article, should include:

  • Title in the original language

  • Title translated into two of the other accepted languages

  • Full Name of the Author

  • Institutional affiliation

  • E-mail

  • Lattes Curriculum link (for Brazilian authors)

  • ORCID link (mandatory for author and co-authors)

  • Short biography – maximum 5 lines in article language

* In case of co-authorship, repeat the information for each author

1. Use of personal information

Information provided by users, such as names and email addresses, will be used exclusively for the journal’s activities and services, including communication about new issues, calls for submissions, and responses to inquiries. Cartema Journal does not share, sell, or disclose personal data to third parties, except when required by law.

2. Who should use our website

This website is intended for individuals aged 18 or older. Children and teenagers should not use it without parental or guardian authorization.

3. Data collected and purpose of collection

Cartema Journal only collects the personal data necessary for publication and scientific communication purposes. No sensitive data—such as racial or ethnic origin, religious beliefs, political opinions, union membership, health, sexual life, or biometric data—will be collected.

Our website uses cookies to improve user experience by remembering preferences and personalizing content. Cookies do not grant access to unauthorized personal information.

Personal data is stored only as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this policy or as required by law. After this period, the data will be deleted or anonymized.

6. Legal bases for personal data processing

Data processing is carried out in accordance with the legal bases provided by the LGPD, which authorizes the use of data for service provision and editorial activities. For more information on the legal bases, users can contact Cartema Journal.

7. User rights

According to the LGPD, users have the following rights:

  • Confirmation of the existence of processing and access to data;

  • Correction of incomplete, inaccurate, or outdated data;

  • Anonymization, blocking, or deletion of unnecessary data or data processed in non-compliance with the law;

  • Information on data sharing with public and private entities;

  • Withdrawal of consent, when applicable.

To exercise these rights, users must submit a formal request. Cartema Journal may request additional information to confirm identity.

8. Data security

Cartema Journal adopts appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect personal data against unauthorized access and security incidents. In case of events such as third-party attacks, Cartema Journal will take steps to mitigate the impact, notifying users and the National Data Protection Authority, as required by the LGPD.

9. Changes to the privacy policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated to reflect changes to the site or editorial practices. Users will be informed of any updates accordingly.
