Dom Pedro II no Inferno de Wall Street - II
Abstract
Resumo: Continuação dos comentários sobre a presença de Dom Pedro II no Inferno de Wall Street de Sousândrade (ver primeira parte em Eutomia Ano IV, N° 1). As quatorze estrofes interpretadas foram inicialmente publicadas em 1877 e tratam da visita do imperador aos Estados Unidos entre abril e julho de 1876 e da sua presença na Exposição do Centenário, realizada em Filadélfia. Sousândrade contrasta os regimes republicano, dos Estados Unidos, e imperial, do Brasil, sem por isso moderar as críticas à corrupção no governo do presidente Ulysses Grant envolvendo colaboradores próximos ao presidente.
Abstract: Continuing commentary on the presence of Brazilian Emperor Dom Pedro II in Sousândrade’s Wall Street Inferno (see first part in Eutomia Year IV, N° 1). The fourteen stanzas discussed were originally published in 1877 and deal with the visit of Dom Pedro to the United States between April and July of 1876, including his participation at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. The American presidential form of government and the Brazilian imperial regime are contrasted. The Grant administration is criticized for the widespread corruption involving close aides to the President.
