Abstract

This essay asks about the poem and the particularity of the “illusion” it fulfills. First highlighting the importance of its phonic aspect - especially rhyme, whose precedence over semantics is suggested - the argument then focuses on its semantic dimension. With regard to the latter, consideration of Freudian theorizing about the “Ego” and the “Id” allows us to discern the unique property of poetry, its poeticity, since poetry does not discriminate between what is and what is not repressed, pointing to the validity of the unconscious in the conscious.
