A lenda do Tatuturema

Resumo: O Tatuturema, episódio epigramático do Segundo Canto de O Guesa de Sousândrade, é analisado com base nas quatro versões publicadas (1867, 1868, 1874, 1887) e na bibliografia oitocentista provavelmente usada pelo autor. É apresentada uma reconstrução histórica dos episódios relatados, que incluem rituais, bebedeiras e festas no Alto Solimões. A fortuna crítica do trecho é analisada, notando-se uma crescente deturpação do sentido original. O desenvolvimento da composição do trecho é acompanhado através das mudanças em edições sucessivas. A etimologia do termo Tatuturema é analisada com especial atenção aos significados da palavra tatu na obra de Sousândrade. No episódio analisado há uma crítica ao tratamento dos índios amazônicos pelo governo imperial brasileiro e ataques sistemáticos à pessoa do imperador D. Pedro II.
Abstract: A critical analysis is made of the Tatuturema, an epigrammatic section of the Second Canto of O Guesa by Sousândrade. All four published versions of Tatuturema (1867, 1868, 1874, 1887) are analyzed, as well as a selection of 19th century works probably used as reference and inspiration by the author. A historical reconstruction of the events described by Sousândrade is presented. They include graphic description of reveling and ritual ceremonies by the Indians of the Upper Solimões river. The literary criticism to which Tatuturema has been subject through the years shows increasing misunderstanding of the author’s intentions. The changes in the published versions also show the development of a work-in-progress. The etymology of Tatuturema is attempted, with particular reference to the varying meanings attached to the word tatu (armadillo, in Portuguese) in Sousândrade’s work. Tatuturema contains a virulent criticism of the treatment of Indians in the Upper Amazon river by the Brazilian government, as well as systematic personal attacks against Dom Pedro II, the Brazilian emperor.
