Dom Pedro II no Inferno de Wall Street - I

Resumo: Vinte e sete por cento das estrofes do Inferno de Wall Street (Nova Iorque, 1877) tratam direta ou indiretamente de D. Pedro II, tornando-o o principal personagem deste trecho de Guesa Errante de Sousândrade. O presente artigo analisa as primeiras oito estrofes sobre o assunto. Especial atenção é dada à viagem imperial aos Estados Unidos (1876) por ser tema de várias estrofes. Reportagens da imprensa norte-americana, fonte de inspiração explicitada pelo autor, são extensamente usadas na exegese do material analisado. O texto original da versão definitiva do Inferno de Wall Street (Londres, c. 1886) é apresentado como anexo.
Abstract: Twenty-seven percent of the stanzas in the first edition (New York, 1877) of Sousandrade‘s Wall Street Inferno deal, directly or by inference, with Brazilian Emperor Dom Pedro II, making him the main character in the Inferno. The first eight such stanzas are analyzed in the present work. Dom Pedro‘s trip to the United States in 1876, which constitutes the backdrop of many of the stanzas, is given particular attention. Newspaper articles, an avowed source of inspiration by the author, are used extensively for interpretation of the texts. A complete version of the London edition (abt. 1886) of the Wall Street Inferno is presented as an attachment.
