"A quase absoluta ausência de suplementos culturais no país explica tanto que muitos livros se publiquem sem o conhecimento do leitor, quanto que, em número bem menor, outros devam se contentar com uma única resenha, boa, apenas informativa ou má, ou com a transcrição de um pequeno fragmento.

Os responsáveis pelas informações culturais justificam suas restrições porque, afinal cumprem ordens. Talvez alguns então se lembrem que, no final da Segunda Guerra, os juízes do tribunal de Nuremberg não deixaram de condenar muitas pessoas precisamente porque haviam cumprido ordens. Mas, ainda quando o saibam, isso não os preocupa. Afinal, agora, apenas silenciam textos e não exterminam pessoas. (Não levemos adiante o raciocínio – ao leitor de fato interessado, sugere-se tão só que guarde o imperativo de cumprir ordens com o que se falará no final sobre o caráter da sociedade atual). [...]"

Those responsible for informing the public about culture justify their restrictions saying they are obeying orders. Some may remember how after the end of Word War II the judges at the Nuremberg trials condemned many war criminals who tried to justify their crimes in precisely these terms. But, even if they remember this, they aren’t concerned. After all, they are not exterminating people, they are merely silencing texts. (But don’t let’s take this reasoning any further – to the interested reader is left the suggestion that he or she save the imperative to obey orders for the final discussion here on the character of today’s society.)
