Ethical Aspects

The journal follows the recommendations of official documents, such as the guidelines on Ethics and Integrity in Scientific Practice, defined in a report prepared by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), as well as the main international recommendations for editors and authors suggested by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

  • Ethics in research with human beings

In the case of research with human beings, the manuscript must explicitly indicate, in the text, the name of the Ethics Committee (CEP) that approved the research and the opinion number or CAAE.

  • Ethics in animal research

For animal studies, authors must explicitly indicate the approval of the research by an Ethics Committee on the Use of Animals (CEUA) that approved the research and the opinion number.

Aspects of using Artificial Intelligence

The Journal of Research and Innovation in Life Sciences, committed to scientific integrity, research ethics and transparency in the production of knowledge, establishes the following guidelines on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in the process of preparing and submitting manuscripts:

  1. Responsible Use of AI Tools: The use of generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, among others) is permitted to assist with writing, translating, grammatical review and textual formatting of manuscripts, provided that:
    • The contribution of AI is recognized explicitly, through a statement, in a topic before the references section called: Use of Assistive Technologies and AI.
    • The use of AI does not compromise the originality of the content, nor does it replace critical analysis, data interpretation or intellectual authorship of the work.

      2. Authorial Responsibility:  The authors remain fully responsible for the content presented in the manuscript, even when AI tools are used. This includes:

    • The veracity of the information;
    • The accuracy of data and references;
    • Conceptual and argumentative clarity.

The use of AI does not exempt authors from ethical and scientific responsibility for the results and conclusions of the article.

        3. Prohibition of Improper Use: The use of AI for the autonomous generation of data, experimental results, graphics or images that are not supported by real and verifiable research is prohibited. Such practices are considered scientific misconduct.

It is also not permitted:

  • Replace human authorship and/or include AI technologies as manuscript authors.
  • Using AI to circumvent plagiarism detection systems or to paraphrase content without proper citation.

        4. Transparency and Declaration: When submitting an article, authors must declare, in the specific field of the system or in the submission letter:

“We declare that the submitted manuscript used Artificial Intelligence tools [specify which tool/technology used] for [specify purpose: e.g. textual review, translation, stylistic suggestions], under our supervision and responsibility, without prejudice to the originality and scientific integrity of the content.”

In the absence of use of AI, the following must be declared:

“We declare that no Artificial Intelligence resources were used in the process of preparing this manuscript.”

       5. Update of the Policy: This policy will be periodically reviewed, considering technological advances, the regulations of research ethics committees, and the guidelines of indexers and science regulatory bodies.

 Adherence to these guidelines is mandatory for the evaluation and publication of manuscripts. Failure to comply may result in rejection of the article or editorial sanctions.

Aspects of Plagiarism

The authors are responsible for the originality of the content presented. The use of ideas, data, texts or images from third parties must be properly referenced. Cases of direct plagiarism, paraphrasing without citation, self-plagiarism (reproduction of excerpts from the author's own previous works without adequate mention), or unauthorized use of content, even with modifications, constitute ethical infractions and will lead to immediate rejection of the manuscript, with notification to the authors and, if necessary, to the institutions involved.

The journal uses similarity detection software (Copyspider) to check the originality of texts. Submissions showing signs of plagiarism will be automatically rejected.

Manuscripts identified as plagiarized, at any stage of the editorial process, will be rejected or retracted, as appropriate. Authors may be suspended from new submissions for a specified period of time. More serious cases will be reported to affiliated institutions.

Research and Innovations in Life Sciences follows the guidelines of COPE – Committee on Publication Ethics for dealing with ethical infractions and expects everyone involved — authors, reviewers and editors — to be committed to scientific integrity.

Conflict of Interest

Authors must ensure that their work is free from any conflict of interest or personal/commercial interest. The conflict must be informed after acknowledgments (if any), after Completion of the work and before References.

Editors and referees must also inform the editor-in-chief of any conflict of interest in relation to the work received. Measures will be taken to avoid ethical problems.

Financing

In the case of works carried out with financial support, these must be mentioned by the authors, in a topic entitled Financing, immediately after the acknowledgments (if any), after the Conclusion of the work and before the References.
