ARQUEOLOGIA FUNERÁRIA NO CEMITÉRIO DE SANTO AMARO, RECIFE, PE: Jazigos e Signos da Elite Recifense na Segunda Metade do Século XIX

Abstract

Este trabalho apresenta o estudo dos jazigos do cemitério de Santo Amaro, localizado no Recife, Pernambuco. O objetivo desse estudo foi identificar e compreender que grupos socioeconômicos estão representados no cemitério entre 1851 a 1900. Os dados materiais analisados demonstram haver distinção social no interior do cemitério e essa pode ser perceptível através do tipo de jazigo, matéria-prima, dos signos utilizados para a decoração tumular e da própria localização do sepultamento. Conclui-se que o processo de mudança dos sepultamentos das igrejas para o cemitério extramuros, ocorrido no século XIX, perpetuou e ampliou as questões de caráter social, econômico e cultural.

FUNERARY ARCHEOLOGY IN THE CEMETERY OF SANTO AMARO, RECIFE, PE: Graves and Signs of the Elite Recifense in the Second Half of the 19th Century

ABSTRACT

This work presents the study of the burial sites of the Santo Amaro cemetery, located in Recife, Pernambuco. The objective of this study was to identify and understand the socioeconomic groups represented in the cemetery between 1851 and 1900. The material data analyzed show that there is a social distinction within the cemetery, and this can be perceived through the type of deposit, the raw material, the signs used for the tomb decoration and the location of the burial. It is concluded that the process of changing the burials of the churches to the cemetery outside the walls, in the nineteenth century, perpetuated and expanded social, economic and cultural.
