Abstract

The Engenho do Meio archaeological site has been a field school since 2018, providing an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students of the Department of Archaeology of the Federal University of Pernambuco (DARQ/UFPE) to participate in historical archaeological research while learning excavation methods and techniques. Focusing around the area of the plantation owners’ house, demolished with the ruins backfilled in the 1940s, the studies include geophysical survey, excavation, photography and drawing of stratigraphic contexts, identification and initial processing of archaeological materials. This report presents the methods employed and summarizes some of the results of the activities carried out until the 2023 campaign.

Author Biographies

Scott Joseph Allen, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco

Possui graduação em Ciências Sociais - University of Maine at Presque Isle (1991), mestrado em Antropologia - Brown University (1995), doutorado em Antropologia - Brown University (2001) e pós-doutorado em Geofísica Arqueológica - USP (2017). Atualmente é Professor Titular do Departamento de Arqueologia da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, pesquisador colaborador no Museu de História Natural da Universidade Federal de Alagoas, do Museu dos Quilombos e Favelas Urbanos (MUQUIFU), Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, e pesquisador do grupo de pesquisa Geofísica Aplicada do Departamento de Geofísica, USP. É atual editor-chefe da revista CLIO Arqueológica. Tem experiência na área de Arqueologia, com ênfase em Teoria e Método em Arqueologia, atualmente atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: arqueologia de contato e colonização, arqueologias afro-indígenas, métodos e técnicas de pesquisa em Arqueologia Histórica, geofísica arqueológica.

Carolina Sá Espinola, Universidade Federal de Pernambuco

Possui graduação em Arqueologia e Preservação Patrimonial pela Fundação Universidade Federal do Vale do São Francisco (2009). Tem experiência na área de Arqueologia, e Preservação Patrimonial. Possui curso na área de tecnotipologia de cerâmica. Possui especialização em história e Cultura a Afro-brasileira pela Universidade Católica de Pernambuco (2012) Atualmente trabalha na Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE) no cargo de técnica administrativa em arqueologia.
