As propriedades rurais do tipo fazenda, dedicadas à agricultura de subsistência e à criação de gado, tiveram grande importância nos primórdios da colonização brasileira, do ponto de vista econômico - unidades de fabrico e venda de produtos agropecuários - e demográico - pontos de manutenção da posse territorial e fixação das populações - contribuindo também para a expansão territorial, na medida em que novas fazendas iam sendo implantadas em áreas circunvizinhas.
