Abstract

This article aims to demonstrate the connection between Archimedes' mathematical studies and their materialization in various forms in the architectural field of the Early Middle Ages. The commonly accepted idea that the Western sciences of the Early Middle Ages were poorly developed and exposed can be modified by a new angle of approach that brings into play various aspects of architectural production. Considering that architecture is a discipline that lies at the crossroads of several distinct specialties, it was in this same logic of diversification of sources that the research for this article was carried out. Besides the exclusive and traditional means of knowledge transmission, which were the manuscripts and the books, the research results lead to the conclusion that architecture was also a fundamental element for this transmission. Two fields of religious architecture would have assumed this role of support of science within society and in the medieval city: through its iconographic representation in the flat space and as a building in real space.
