The legacy of John Dewey: Pragmatism, Art and Education
Over the last forty years there have been recurrent debates about John Dewey’s aesthetic work. Published in 1934, “Art as Experience” is now celebrating its 90th anniversary. The work has already been considered one of the most important works of 20th century philosophy of art written in English, as well as one of the works responsible for consolidating the American aesthetic tradition in history. For Dewey’s many interpreters, the book goes beyond its discussion of aesthetics and is a valuable tool for understanding pragmatism and Dewey’s philosophical system. But it was not only philosophical peers who found this work a source of inspiration; the book also influenced generations of artists and educators. Ninety years after its publication, it is time to take a closer look at the relevance of Dewey’s legacy.
This call for papers seeks work on the intersection of the themes of pragmatism, art and education that can contribute to reflecting these legacies and the current state of pragmatist aesthetic thought, and Deweyan thought in particular. The scope of interest is limited to philosophical discussions, and not to works of practical and instrumental application. Papers will be accepted in Portuguese, English and Spanish.
