Abstract

In A Spirit of Trust (2019), Robert Brandom endorses and attributes to Hegel a conceptual realism according to which reality itself is conceptually structured, independent of our practices. This realism, based not on universals or types but on modal incompatibility relations between things, would in turn ground the transcendental conditions of possibility for conceptual norms with determinate content. The present text sets out Brandom's understanding of the status of concepts in Hegel's absolute idealism and what he understands as Hegelian conceptual realism. It then seeks to analyze this reading through considerations about the use of the terms “realismˮ and “idealismˮ in Hegelian philosophy, its comparison to other similar positions in the literature on Hegel, such as those of R. Stern and K. Westphal, and the presentation of some criticisms of Brandom's reading, especially that of W. Wolf.
