Call for Papers: Philosophy of Cognitive Science

Cognitive Sciences form an interdisciplinary field of cognition studies whose founding objective was to establish a unifying theory of the mind, through a strong inclination to understand cognition based on representations and information processing. Philosophy in this classical context investigates issues such as the nature of representation, the role of computational models, and explores the relationships between disciplines of this field. However, some currents of contemporary philosophy of Cognitive Sciences have adhered to explanatory pluralism, focusing on interdisciplinary work on a cognition that is not limited to performing mental computations in a brain; but that is embodied, situated, and extended in the environment. Furthermore, cognition in this context is not exclusive to human beings, as it is also explored in the non-human and artificial worlds. In both cases, the role of philosophy is fundamental and consists of not only guiding the various interdisciplinary paths but also exploring and analyzing them, creating new contexts, methodologies, and theories to encompass the data produced by the field.

The present issue invites works in the philosophy of (and in) Cognitive Sciences that can contribute to the contemporary debate on human and non-human cognition. In particular, articles on the nature of cognition, animal cognition, Artificial Intelligence & cognition, as well as the role that the physical body and the environment play in cognitive practices are of central interest to this call (but not limited to these). It is important to emphasize that the scope of interest of this issue consists only of philosophical discussion about cognition, so technical works lacking philosophical conceptualization will not be considered. This call will accept works in Portuguese, English, and Spanish.
