Abstract

In this paper, the author, having in view the liberal and Kantian thesis of the priority of the right over the good, points out the Habermas’ and Rawls’ hesitations regarding the status or the role of sentiments in moral and political motivations. In a second step, he challenges the thesis of moral sentiments, with Humean inspiration, in order to explore the idea of rational motivation. Finally, the author suggests the application of these questions into the discussion on “patriotism/nationalism”.
