Abstract

The aim of this article is to discuss how many and what are the formulations of the causal principle as well as what is its content and function in the context of the proof of the existence of material things. The investigation intends to show that there are at least two different non contradictory formulations and that there is no need to choose one of them in order to understand the causal principle because these formulations depends on the specifics questions about the causal relations. The analysis will show that the general formulation of the causal principle provides the conditions in which it is possible to think about the active cause of sensations and the specific formulation concerns specifically to an inquire of the mechanism by which bodies can cause sensations.
