Abstract

The representations of the bull’s immolation by Mithras seem to stage the generation of a new life: when the bull falls lifeless, the blood that gushes from its neck irrigates and nourishes the wheats and from its tail a bundle of spikes arises. In this paper we will analyze the connection between Mithraic tauroctony and certain passages of Porphyry's De antro nympharum that configure the exegesis of a Mithras, demiurge and lord of the generation, which is projected in the agricultural symbolism of Renaissance engravings and illustrations.
