Abstract

The main goal of this work is to offer a fresh view on the role of language in the theory of cognition and intentionality in Franz Brentano’s philosophy. Brentano's major interpreters and scholars have assumed that language plays no fundamental role since for Brentano speech is only a sign of thought. However, Brentano always demonstrates in his work a focus on the analysis of the terms and concepts employed in language. In his lectures on logic, moreover, an important part is devoted to Stuart Mill’s theory of names. In order to modify, therefore, the idea that language plays no significant role in Brentano's philosophy, the present work attempts to show that the relation between naming, signifying and thinking is, for Brentano, a continuous relation in that the three terms are always connected Symbolic presentation and its role in empirical knowledge is the central concept of this contribution that partially reconstructs the issue of symbolic knowledge in Brentano and establishes the difference between Brentano’s and Twardowski's content theory of presentation.
