A Critical Analysis of Kitcher's Proposal

Abstract

In “The Plight of the Platonism”, Kitcher (1978) opposes, in a highly articulate manner, what is referred to as arithmetic Platonism, aiming to demonstrate that the main arguments provided by proponents of this view — namely, the Fregean arguments — fail. In this paper, it will be argued in favor of the thesis that Kitcher's objections to the Fregean arguments supporting arithmetic realism are not fruitful objections, as they disregard important aspects of mathematical practice, specifically, aspects concerning the attitudes that mathematicians have towards the various reductions of the concept of number to the concept of set.
