Resumo

Este artigo considera e critica dois modelos de responsabilidade moral: o modelo retributivo, que vê a responsabilização como uma resposta retributiva ou punitiva a um transgressor, e o modelo reabilitativo, que vê a responsabilização como uma ferramenta para o aprimoramento da agência, melhoria moral, ou andaimes morais. Defendo que, embora a responsabilidade possa servir estes propósitos, deve fazê-lo de uma forma que (também) aborde a opressão. Chamo esta visão de “melhoradora” porque procura melhorar o sistema de responsabilidade através da justiça social. Ao apresentar este argumento, sublinho as ligações entre retribuição e reabilitação na prática (ou seja, no mundo real) e a injustiça estrutural. Estas ligações são muitas vezes omitidas ou negligenciadas nas descrições optimistas do potencial retributivo e reabilitador da responsabilidade, em contraste com a sua triste realidade.
